I first noticed world events at 14 or 15 too. Being the history buff that I was in high school, I took almost all available history courses during those mid-teen years: World History, American History (2 years), U.S. Government, Comparative (International) Politics, European History, etc. I still remember a lot of stuff I had to memorize for those classes, which helped me establish a global worldview and subsequently led me to area studies in college.
I just happened to be at the right (wrong?) place at the right time in 1989. I was still a bit young then, and I don't think I would have known much about it if I weren't right in the middle of action. Mom took me to a protest demonstration—a little hard to ignore the facts when you're in the middle of tens of thousands of people crying out against an act of violence :p
