By way of [livejournal.com profile] sabershadowkat...

Light Unite, donate via virtual candle-lighting. For every candle lit, Bristol-Myers Squibb will donate $1 to help fight HIV/AIDS. Spread the word!

I almost got a free copy of the New York Times today. I saw a bunch of them lying about on the sidewalk, right in front of our store. Now, people had already started taking copies out of the tied-up bundles and I was going to take one when I got off work, but I had to be all responsible and asked my manager if the newspapers were meant for the store. They said yes, so *grumbles* I had to hual the (very heavy) bundles inside and display them, so no free newspaper for me -_-;;

Dear Friends and Family,

Many of you have been bombarding me with ways in which you can channel money through the UN to assist victims of this horrible tragedy in Pakistan. Please donate at the following UNHCR website: http://www.unhcr.ch/donate/redirect.html

Alternatively we have also set up a FLASH APPEAL and can go directly to the UN Country Office in Islamabad @ http://www.un.org.pk/earthquake05 - this website is the most up to date with information regarding relief.

For those of you who want to donate physical goods (we need more tents!) I am in contact with our office in Islamabad who will give me a secure address/method for delivery in the coming days.

UNDP Regional Center Colombo will be taking the lead in post earthquake reconstruction in Northern Pakistan, you can revert to me directly with any problems and questions you have.

I implore you all to please please give the maximum you can as we are in a race against the clock to find those still alive and house millions left with nothing. Thank you.

With warm regards,

[Sender's Name and contact information]

Note # 1: I’ve separated the currently active communities from the inactive ones. I deem a comm inactive if there hasn’t been any new post in the past week or so. Please do take a look at the inactive ones if you have a chance. New activities may have sprung up since my last visit.

Note #2: Please note that the weather-focused communities have started to discuss non-Katrina subjects. Be prepared to wade through landslides and Ophelia if you’re specifically looking for Katrina information.

Note #3: Much, much thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kletta for providing me with the names of many of the comms in this list!

Now onto the list, behind the cut... )

Announcing two resources for displaced college students!

[livejournal.com profile] alchemy_gryph from [livejournal.com profile] academics_anon has put together a list of schools that are accepting displaced college students on her LJ:
♦ Alphabetical list of colleges and universities accepting displaced students, A-I, J-O, and P-Z.

[livejournal.com profile] compscilin took the initiative to transfer the data from that list and from others’ LJ lists onto a Wikinews page so information can be more accessible to the general public:
Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students

The page is being constantly renewed, with more than 65 school announcements still to be added. If you are a student, or have made a similar list and noticed that a certain school is not listed, please feel free to contribute to the masterlist by doing one of two things:

1. Edit the new information directly into the Wikinews page (instructions here and here ).

2. Leave a comment at the discussion page or at the instructions page. Someone will take your comment and edit your contribution into the article.

Please help spread the word!

A lot of you on my f-list are college students. If you're anything like me, college student = poor. I understand that. I'm poor.

So here's a unique challenge:
The fall semester is just starting. Instead of buying new textbooks, I challenege people to 1) get used books online, or 2) check the necessary books out from the library. Then, go back to your campus bookstore and see how much you would have spent on textbooks. As much as it's possible and logical (don't go broke over this!), donate the money you saved to any Hurricane Katrina funds.
I'm going to do it -- I already checked out a whole bunch of books from the library.

Behind the LJ cut are some suggestions to go about doing this wisely.

Some Suggestions... )

If you're willing to take up the challenge, please leave a comment so I can root for you ^_^

[ETA: If you've already bought books, try taking on a reverse challenge: did you save money by purchasing online? Can you spare some of those net savings for the Katrina relief cause?]

These are the colleges and universities that have posted announcements to accept displaced college students. Feel free to comment with more schools since this is by no means a complete list. Please pass it on to those displaced and are looking for new schools.

LJ cut for length.

(Long) List of Schools Extending Special Admissions )

This list is in no way exhaustive. It’s just a resource to help someone get started if s/he (or someone you know) is looking for a new campus to temporarily call home.

As news stories are moving onto the videotapes of the London bombers and of the hospitalization of Jacques Chirac, or even of Andre Agassi's advance into U.S. Open's third round, I feel the need to consolidate various Hurricane Katrina communities. Just for my organization, mainly, but perhaps this compiled list can urge people to stay involved or to move on, whichever direction the latest news are taking you.

These are the currently active Katrina-related LJ communities, as far as I know. There may be more—in fact, I know there are more, because I didn't include the inactive ones, off-topic ones, and the ones that only have one member so far. But things change: postings might spark, discussions might return to topic, and new members might join the newly created communities. So this is not a be-all-and-end-all list, just a list.

Help Hurricane Katrina Survivors – No Cash Required
Taken from Karen M. Jones of http://www.BenevolentPlanet.com, author of The Difference a Day Makes: 365 Ways to Change Your World in Just 24 Hours (New World Library 2005)

Please be sure to BACKGROUND CHECK THE CHARITY before taking action, where applicable. I've provided Guidestar reports where possible, but I may have missed some, and it never hurts to cross-check for a nonprofit's legitimacy even after Guidestar-ing it.

Some communities that might be of interest in light of the recent hurricane Katrina sweeping through the southern part of the U.S.:

Relief/help focused comms:
[livejournal.com profile] cat5_katrina -- Hurricane Katrina concern & support for victims
[livejournal.com profile] hpkatrinarelief -- 2005 Hurrican Katrina from the Harry Potter fandom
[livejournal.com profile] katrina_info -- Info on Katrina (not the most active community)
[livejournal.com profile] katrinarollcall -- Roll call (not too active either)

Information focused comms:
[livejournal.com profile] 2005hurricanes -- Hurricane season 2005 discussion
[livejournal.com profile] hurricanehaters -- Hurricane haters, lovers, and survivors (The posts a few days back are more informative. Recent posts are more personal.)
[livejournal.com profile] weathernerds -- This comm's current posts all focus on Hurricane Katrina

I'm sure there are a lot more communities out there, as well as personal LJs with recent posts about Katrina. Here is [livejournal.com profile] polykleitos' post on Katrina news links yesterday. [livejournal.com profile] katrinacane is a journal that links to people who blog/report about Katrina directly from affected areas. I know [livejournal.com profile] xylodemon is writing drabbles for people who donated money to help relief funds that go to Hurricane Katrina, and there are probably a lot more people doing that all over LJ. And don't forget, donate through organizations such as Red Cross!

Feel free to let me know of other links.
ETA: Check out [livejournal.com profile] fandom_charity to help starving artists/writers raise funds for support!

To those affected: thoughts and prayers go out to you!
