First, before I yet again succumb to laziness, THANK YOU to everyone who gifted me with a snowflake cookie all those weeks back. I loved every single one of them, except now that they've disappeared from my userinfo page I don't know how to look up you wonderful gifters for a proper thank you. Hugs to you all, you know who you are :D

I had a fun-filled late Christmas/early New Years dinner with [personal profile] best_of_five, [personal profile] bethbethbeth, [personal profile] midnitemarauder, and [profile] paranoidsistah last night. Yummy Mediterranean food is yum. We'll be meeting again on Sunday, when [personal profile] titti will join us, for Cantonese-style dim sum. Fandom friends + good food = win.

Happy Chinese New Year!!!

I have today off (w00t!). It's been a nice weekend spent in NJ. Not much going on except lots of food and TV, both of which are always nice. I don't think I've had so much candy in a long time ;p

Work is still consuming the majority of my time. Most of the time it's challenging and fun, with new projects and possibly new staff joining (yes, our organization is hiring!). But this also means it's been very busy -- new contracts means lots of new reports, meetings, performance "quotas," etc. The good news is that our phone has been ringing off the hook with new clients. The bad news is that many of these clients are seeking foreclosure help. Sigh.

On the home front, I've finally started playing my Christmas present -- Animal Crossing: City Folks! I've named our town New NY, in a humble tribute to the City in which I live and to another City in the far, far future, where a beloved Doctor and two of his companions had traveled. New NY is currently inhabited by about 10 animals and two humans: [livejournal.com profile] ziasudra and [livejournal.com profile] sunnydlita (a.k.a. SunnyD). The ubiquitous Tom Nook is still scamming money out of us all, but it's a good town, with fishes and fossils and K.K. Slider airchecks. Does any out-of-towners want to visit us? *puppy eyes*

In Real Life, I've been trying to catch up with different friends in the City. The l00bs met for a weekend a few weeks ago, which was a lot of fun. I'm also hoping to finally get together with [livejournal.com profile] so_severus and [livejournal.com profile] sparkly_stuff sometime this week, after months of having vastly different (and incompatible) schedules.

So, Happy Lunar New Year to all! I hope the Year of the Ox will be a good and joy-filled one!

I finally checked my mail yesterday (been out of my apartment for the past week or so) and picked up some wonderful cards sitting in the mailbox, waiting for me! :D

HUGE thank yous for your holiday cards: [livejournal.com profile] a_belladonna, [livejournal.com profile] bewarethesmirk, [livejournal.com profile] coffee_n_cocoa, [livejournal.com profile] lesyeuxverts00, [livejournal.com profile] pennswoods, and [livejournal.com profile] thescarletwoman.

I'll be going to a holiday gathering thingy at [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r's later today. We won't have as many NYC l00bs there as past years, but it should be lots of fun :)

A Happy New Year to everyone!
ziasudra: (Xmas)
Back at my old apartment to pick up mail, and boy do I have some good stuff among the pile of unsolicited advertisements! I got:

1. From [livejournal.com profile] elanorofcastile: A lovely, lovely Snape's Animagus form bat ornament that shall be hanging proudly on my family's Christmas tree from now on :)

2. From [livejournal.com profile] saladbats: A gorgeous Snape greeting card with lovely pencil sketching, stamped paper handprint, and a cauldronful of Snape's potions brewed just for me!

Thank you so much! :D

I'm so glad to have computer/Internet access again! Been without my laptop and functional Internet signal for two nights and I was feeling the withdrawal right from the beginning XD

So I feel like I'm waaay behind the times, but...

HOLIDAY CARDS!

If you'd like to receive a holiday (of your choice) card, please comment with your contact info (screened) or email it to me at ziasudra @ gmail . com. I'd love to send them out to whoever wants one! In turn, if you're offering cards, please link me to your card post :)

It's official. I'm no longer a Manhattanite. I've now (more or less) moved into Astoria, sharing an apartment with [livejournal.com profile] sunnydlita and her current housemate. I still spend most of my waking hours in Manhattan though, so I feel like the only thing I've changed is my sleeping location.

In keeping with the all-American tradition of hot dog-eating, Roommate A and I went out to Gray's Papaya for hot dogs this morning. Hot dogs for breakfast... yum ^_^;;

I spent the day fixing up my resume to reflect my latest title change. Try as I may, I couldn't get it to fit into one page, and that was already after I cut out anything remotely irrelevant. Wow, my "solid" experiences are piling up *g*

I also spent the day thinking today's a Saturday, and my brain is desperately trying not to go splodey from the lack of Doctor Who, which won't be aired until tomorrow. To keep myself sane sate my Who withdrawal, I trawled YouTube for Doctor Who vids and found this wonderful Doctor Who/Torchwood gem made by [livejournal.com profile] heidi8 back in November 2007 -- Almost Like a Prophecy (Doctor/Jack).

I then spent more time reminiscing the good ol' days of Mandarin and Cantopop songs. Below the cut is a decent-sized list of songs I've come to fall in love all over again (click to listen on YouTube). I only chose one song per artist to keep the list small, but I decided to do a little spotlight moment on 羅大佑 and my many favorite songs of his.

My list of classic Chinese pop songs, let me show you it )

Tonight? Japanese food soon and then I'm heading home :)

To everyone who celebrates it, Happy Lunar New Year!

Whee, I have a five-day weekend! And the office closed early yesterday too. That's longer than my 4.5-day Thanksgiving break! I'm not completely off the hook from work duties, though. Mandatory New Year's parade participation on Saturday and Sunday, and the fact that I'm constantly in touch with the State and other non-Lunar New Year observing government/non-profit/for-profit agencies means I'll still be thinking about work stuff throughout the weekend. But at least I get to not set my alarm clock for a few days :)

I've officially been working at my current job for one year. I only started full-time in September, so I'm not eligible for any vacations yet. But my co-workers have known and seen me around for a year, and it's weird to think that when I first took the job, it was originally a sort of self-demotion to downgrade my work commitment from the full-time Internet job to my then part-time responsibilities.y

Looking back, I believe I made the right decision to turn down the initial offer of starting right off as a full-time employee. I had wanted to work less hours, so trading full-time with full-time would have been disastrous, and I very much doubt I'd still be working where I am now had I forced myself to take the offer. Starting as part-time gave me the opportunity to learn the ropes without being fully committed; it also meant less expectation pinned on me, so all my first blunders were overlooked quite graciously.

Strange journey, this past year. I like unpredictability and working a different schedule every week; I'd choose a job I love with low pay over a so-so job with high pay, hands down. Sometimes I look back at where I was and where I am now, and genuinely wonder how the heck did I end up in such a normal, white-collar office job.

And since it's Chinese New Year, I bring you the sage wisdom of The Fortune Cookie:

My Fortune Cookie told me:
Confucius say, it is time to lift a stone only to drop on your own feet.
Get a cookie from Miss Fortune

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] luciechan and [livejournal.com profile] mingbutterfly, for your beautiful cards (and the beautiful words written inside them)! :D

Had a late start today, but I'm excited about going to Lisa's for the l00bs Christmas party. (Lisa, if you're reading this, I plan to take the 12:46 train from Penn Station.) There will be exchanging of gifts, eating of cake, and just general t00bing around in celebration of a belated Christmas and early New Year.

Oh, and guess what I found in my building's garbage room today? An upright lamp in good condition that someone had thrown away -- and it WORKS!!! Merry Christmas to meeee! It's now standing proud and tall in my room where the old lamp was, next to other furniture my roommates and I had salvaged from the garabage room in the past: a bamboo chair and a nice little night table.

I love it when my neighbors decide to redecorate their apartments with new furnitures. Now if only the neighbor decides to throw away a second upright lamp... *g*

And thank you especially to [livejournal.com profile] a_belladonna for your lovely, lovely print of your Snarry Art Games entry (*melts*), and to [livejournal.com profile] ebonyserpent for the Hedwig art and snowflake ornament!

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it!!!

The weekend has been a blur of playing Rock Band. Boy Cousin is the resident "Expert Level" guitar player (though I hasten to add: I'm better at the real guitar than he ;p). Girl Cousin and I switch off playing the drums, but mostly I'm relegated to singing because I've figured out how to change pitches to match the arrow going up and down on the screen. This doesn't mean I actually know how to sing any of the songs. Oh, and I've found out that singing "la, la... blah, something... blah" is just as effective as singing the actual words *g*

I hope you're all enjoying a peaceful and restful holiday... or just a Tuesday that you have off!

Happy Holidays to everyone :D

Because a certain someone asked me over the weekend, I finally got the needed push to write up my holiday wish list. No particular order, and the items don't necessarily all make sense:

  1. Write or draw me stuff!!! I love getting anything creativity-related :)
  2. Metrocards. Yes, the good ol' Metrocard for New York City public transporting. I use them, it's practical, and virtually ubiquitous in the Big Apple. Per-ride cards are love; unlimited cards would go to waste.
  3. I am in much need of a floor lamp. The kind that sticks up vertically and gives light at the top. I prefer brightness over design, since I'm one of those people who like to take off the lampshade part of lamps in order to get more light. And please, one that uses regular light bulbs. The death of my previous lamp that brought about this request, unfortunately, uses some sort of obscure halogen light bulb that I can't find anywhere.
  4. Speaking of light bulbs, I would love to get a few of those energy efficient light bulbs that they sell in Home Depot -- n:vision or other similar brands.
  5. I also find myself in dire need of a telephone we can use for the apartment (as anyone who has tried to call probably knows). Cordless phone with answering machine would be great, though in reality, anything functional is already fantastic.
  6. Espresso beans to feed my espresso machine. Ungrounded whole beans or finely grounded beans only, please.
  7. To go with the above item, I need a small metal pitcher with handle and a thermometer, for the purposes of holding the milk and measuring its temperature while steaming.
  8. I find myself in need of a combination lock. Yes, the kind where you set a number sequence, then click it shut.
  9. Gift cards. In direct response to a certain someone who asked: I tend to "shop" at fandango, K-Mart, Starbucks, Duane Reade, Whole Foods, Best Buy and, er, Chinatown.
  10. Donate to your favorite charity of choice. Seriously, I'd much rather someone give to a worthy cause than buy me things I never end up using. If you're in need of a suggestion, Heifer International is always a favorite of mine.

And a thank you to [livejournal.com profile] lynkemma, [livejournal.com profile] shipchan, [livejournal.com profile] dove95, and [livejournal.com profile] sealcat -- I got your cards!!! :D

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

And a happy Thursday to my friends not in the US *g*

This year, it's going to New Jersey for me. Gosh, California, Ohio, and then NJ in two weeks -- I think I've cured any travel bug that may have been in me. The plan is to eat lots of food and do a lot of writing. Though probably not so much sleeping, since Black Friday is tomorrow.

Thank you, my friends, for being who you are. Here's to a wonderful Turkey-Day to you all!

And a reminder to fill out my Holiday Card Poll if you haven't already done so. :D

Happy Halloween!!!

Went to the OTW Halloween Party on Saturday. This year, I recycled my costume from the previous Halloween and dressed up as a dragon (someone somewhere should have a picture of me in it). It was supposed to be a Welch Green Dragon from the Harry Potter series, but I've been told I looked more like Yoshi from Super Mario Brothers ^_^;;

Carve your own pumpkin, the mess-free way! I played with this quite a bit last night. It was a lot of fun *g*

Roommate is going to the infamous Village Parade. I'm probably not going, having already braved through the sardine-packed crowd for two years. She's going to be Lady Justice, all wrapped in a toga and with a homemade scale made out of strings, a rod, and paper plates.
ziasudra: (Default)

'Tis the season of mooncakes and lanterns again, and of the moon I cannot see due to Very Tall Buildings in my Manhattan neighborhood.

I'm absolutely bloated from eating mooncakes. Working for an Asian-based organization means I've eaten some fraction of a mooncake every single day for the past two weeks. It's great that our clients love us and keep sending us tin boxes upon tin boxes of these high-sugar, high-cholestral, high-calories goodies, but not so great for the body, heh. I've tried a wide variety of mooncakes so far: lotus, white lotus, nuts & ham, dates, red bean paste, "Taiwanese" and ones with preserved egg yolk(s).

On a whim, I decided to go to Coney Island today. No, I didn't get to see the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest (Bayashi didn't win this time *gasps*), but I got to walk around and enjoy the day before the rain came.

There was a huge crowd in front of Nathan's in the mid-afternoon, so I went to the place next door and got a corn dog and a knish. I haven't had a corn dog in a long time, and it was so very satisfying :) I did go back to Nathan's later that day for fish and chips though (the seafood line was slightly shorter).

I really enjoyed being able to walk around alone. I'm one of those people who really loves doing stuff by myself: traveling, going to movies, eating at restaurants, walking around random places, etc. It's sad how since my free time had become limited, I hardly had the chance to have fun alone anymore, because for efficiency's sake it's better to do things with other people so I can get both the hanging out and the doing things parts out of the way at the same time (don't get me wrong, I love my friends). I had to physically schedule in a time to go watch PotC3 by myself because I didn't want to be influenced by anyone's reactions or expectations, and that's just sad, not being able to do things alone spontaneously.

So I had a good time being spontaneously solitary today. Although as chance would have it, I ran into B, a friend I knew from the grad student SG, while walking along Surf Avenue. Meeting someone I know randomly in a city of 8 million people? How was that possible?!?

I spent some time in the arcades and took home a plastic punch bowl, a deck of cards, and four SpongeBob SquarePants stickers. I feel all grown up and responsible, choosing "practical" prizes like a punch bowl while other kids are clamoring to get trinkets and stuffed toys *g*

To the Americans on my flist, Happy July 4!
ziasudra: (Gong Xi)

It's soooo good to be home. We had the usual New Year's Eve dinner and the first New Year's meal, which was a vegetarian dish of various Chinese vegetables (in which oysters somehow don't count as meat). I also partook from a gigantic Wegman's bread that was in the shape of a dragon (sprinkled with colorful sugars on top) and had clam chowder and rice cake.

It's such a night-and-day difference to be home and not at 6K, to be able to watch basketball with the entire family (yeah NBA All Star games!!!). For once, I'm not the odd basketball-crazed fan who keeps changing the TV channel from Roommate A's favorite channel of Food Network to ESPN or TNT, nor do I need to make sure the TV is free right before a must-see game so I don't have to end up sitting through some random VH1 show. Because here at home, the thing to watch was the NBA All Stars games *g*

Squeeage: Arenas at the 3-point competition? Awesome. Dwight slapping a sticker of himself on the backboard at 12 feet 6 inches during the slam dunk competition? Genius. Oh and Steve Nash with his new haircut? *melts* Dirk's short hair looks great too. And there's Yao Ming, tall as ever! So many basketball stars, I can go on...

...uh, yeah, this is supposed to be a Chinese New Year post, so: Happy New Year and all the best to everyone in the Year of the Boar!

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

I believe there'll always be racism as long as there is a human race; it's so ingrained in human nature to notice what's different and label it repulsive or undesirable. Today it might be black vs. white. Tomorrow it can be blue eyes vs. green eyes, or ears with lobes vs. ears without lobes. What I find admirable about Martin Luther King, Jr. is that he kept on fighting for what he believed to be right. And he did it in such a way that he and his movement became inspirations to many, even if the results of King's efforts came years after he died.

Part of the reason why I like InterVarsity so much is because of the organization's commitment to racial reconciliation. I have yet to be part of a group that's so committed to not only address personal injustice, but to work on issues on a more macro level through education (both learning and teaching) and service.

There are still plenty of racial discriminations around. But today reminds me that since the Civil Rights Movement, much progress has been made.

2006 was a weird year, and I can't believe it's over already. The year is ending in a not-so-good note: for those of you who don't know, my grandma on my dad's side passed away earlier this week. I've calmed down from my initial existential crisis and am on my way to planning a trip to Hong Kong. Lots of you have helped and I truly appreciate it. You know who you are. *glomps*
