Went to see the Star Trek movie last night with [personal profile] midnitemarauder, [profile] paranoidsistah, [personal profile] bethbethbeth, [personal profile] titti, [personal profile] cordelia_v, and [personal profile] amelia_eve. I'm now filled with so much squee. The movie was AWESOME, and I have already successfully convinced a couple of my co-workers to go watch the movie first thing over the weekend.

So tired right now. But it's okay because OMG Star Trek squee! XD

I had this huge craving for steak, raw fish, and deep-fried food today. Steaks are expensive, so I compromised and had a burger with calamari for lunch, then later walked to the local Japanese convenience store to pick up brown rice sushi and bubble tea. *checks calendar* Yup, it's that time of the month again.

2.
Yesterday I was walking around the markets in Union Square, and randomly ran into my roommate M from college and her now-husband A! I think the last time I saw them was at my other college roommate's wedding a year ago. I followed them to dinner and met up with new friends and some other people I also knew from college. Nostalgia, that.

3.
Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. I believe this is available for free online viewing until midnight today, so go watch it if you haven't yet! And it's Joss Whedon! :D

The Dark Knight. Saw it, loved it, would see it again on DVD though probably not in a theater unless it's IMAX. Christian Bale is a very, very good Bruce Wayne (and Batman too, but I like his Bruce Wayne persona better). All the hype about Heath Ledger's performance is true -- his Joker was one-of-a-kind. Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Aaron Eckhart are love. And Gary Oldman for the win! He totally brought the comicverse version of Commissioner Gordon to life; I can't imagine another actor playing the role as well as he.

My computer's been sick since last, last Thursday. At one point I couldn't even do a simple Google search in IE or Firefox. Thank goodness I still have an ancient version of Netscape installed on my computer. But even with that, I've had trouble getting online most days since last week. :(

6.
Next week and the week after are New York City's Restaurant Week. I've already made a dinner booking with the l00bs at a fancy Japanese restaurant. Lots of good places to check out, especially those otherwise unaffordable places that normally have $90 prix fixe menus or averages over $75 per meal per person.

7.
I'm finally getting my own business cards, yay. For the past year and a half, I've been taking Boss Lady's cards and writing my own name and email in the white space. So the client got two lovely contacts for the price of one! Now I'll have my own stack of placeholders bookmarks cards that I'll never use up, not if Boss Lady who's worked at the organization for sixteen years still has hundreds of hers.

I've been trying to leave birthday greetings in people's LJs but have been slacking recently. So happy belated and early birthdays to all you second-half-of-July babies: [livejournal.com profile] thescarletwoman, [livejournal.com profile] lampblack, [livejournal.com profile] tanechigai, [livejournal.com profile] sra_black, and [livejournal.com profile] dove95!!!

I went to see Sweeney Todd with [livejournal.com profile] so_severus and her friend V last night, and it was amazing. I really loved how the main characters all pulled off a musical. Johnny Depp sings well -- not Broadway operatic calibre, but very good nonetheless. Helena Bonham Carter really fits her role. While the music geek in me might have a few things to say about her singing/breathing technique, I can't imagine anyone else playing that role. Alan Rickman is the perfect Judge Turpin, though in all honesty, he's not the best singer in the world ;p The supporting roles -- Timothy Spall, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Ed Sanders (the little boy) were wonderful too. In fact, the letter two are much better singers and I can envision them having future careers in the musical stage if they so choose.

The movie was bloody -- in the Tim Burton, "bleak everything vs. dark red paint-like blood" way -- and appropriately macabre. I'm sure at some point of the movie I, [livejournal.com profile] so_severus, and V had all turned away from the screen to avoid yet another bloody moment. So if you go see it, expect blood and gore. There's a reason why the movie is called Demon Barber on Fleet Street. The fact that this was the screen version and not the stage play probaby meant it was a lot bloodier than the original Stephen Sondheim play (educated guess; I've never seen the stage version). The film is rated R for a reason.

Do I recommend Sweeney Todd? To my flist, definitely yes. I wouldn't recommend it for kids under fourteen/fifteen though (as we exited the theater we saw a kid walking out who could not have been older than nine or ten -- I wondered if his parents/guardians knew what they were bringing him to see). Would I want to watch it again? If the opportunity pops up, definitely yes. At least on TV when the DVD version comes out *g*

I've been eagerly waiting for the release of Se, Jie (or Lust, Caution) since I first heard about Ang Lee making this movie. I went to see it tonight. (Yes, this is the infamous NC-17 movie.)

Before I write about what I think, I need to lay out a few caveats: I'm fluent in Chinese, I like Ang Lee but didn't love Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (I feel like I've seen much better films in that genre), and I've always liked Tony Leung.

So what did I think about the film? (With cultural references and fun stuff!) )

All this tl;dr to say that, if Lust, Caution is playing in a theater near you, I would definitely recommend watching it.

I just came back from bubble tea with a bunch of people, [livejournal.com profile] everydaysushi among them. I had a coconut nectar drink with lychee cubes. Very tasty ^_^

When we met for tea, [livejournal.com profile] everydaysushi and her friend K had just come out of watching Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (hereon referred to as PotC and/or AWE). Not surprisingly, they didn't really like it, as a lot of people have not liked it. This got me thinking: am I the only one who liked PotC 3: AWE?

Well, I know some fans liked it (although I don't consider myself an "involved" fan, not like I'm a fan of Harry Potter or the Lewis Cha novels or even Kingdom Hearts and Wolf's Rain). Here's an example of a fan's favorable reaction to AWE (Warning: VERY image heavy, but cool pictures *g*).

Furthermore, I highly, highly urge everyone to read this post by Henry Jenkins: The Pleasure of Pirates and What It Tells Us About World Building in Branded Entertainment.

He put into words some of the exact sentiment of why I felt frustrated when people didn't like the film. I wanted to say to them: "Look deeper! Dwell on it, think about it not as a Classical Disney film, but as a film sharing the Web 2.0 value of audience participation, of inviting active viewing the way that the emerging Convergence Culture ought to function."

So please, hit the pause button and click onto Henry Jenkin's review (which he calls "rant"). Because I totally agree with him: AWE is "one of the best summer movies that I have seen in a long long time and a powerful illustration of the ways that convergence culture is reshaping how franchise entertainment operates."

Now onto my own thoughts/ramblings about PotC: AWE...

I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End today. It was very entertaining, intriguing at parts, and definitely better than I thought it'd be (I'm generally wary of sequels). For a Disney movie, this is on the very high end of violence and dark rating, but I think it gives the movie more depth, and the main characters have visibly grown/developed since the first movie, which is always a good thing with series.

If you haven't seen the movie yet, the one advice I'd give is: sit through the very long credits and wait for the bonus scene at the very end! The theater was pretty empty when I watched the film today, and I was one of the handful that stuck around till the end of the credits, and boy am I glad I did! :)

Just got back from watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters with [livejournal.com profile] sparkly_stuff, who gave the assessment -- and I completely agree -- that the movie is totally for the win.

It's very hard to summarize the movie, because there isn't exactly a plot. But it's awesome though, from the very first scene to the end, when aliens are defeated and mass confusion ensues as to how exactly our favorite fast food characters are related to everyone else in the cast. But, oh, it's utter crack and it really doesn't matter if anything makes sense at all *g*

One thing though, this is definitely an adult film. No kiddies just because "omg it's cartoon and has colorful animations!" But then all ATHF fans already know that, right?

Now I must try to distract myself from the aftermaths of bursting out in random bouts of giggles as I think about the film...
