Course: Problems & Methods of Middle Eastern Studies
Goal: Critical, well-thought-out paper, 15-20 pages, double-spaced.
Goal for tomorrow: Read "Researching Gender in a Palestinian Camp: Political, Theoretical and Methodological Issues" by Rosemary Sayigh. Make a trip to New School Library, perhaps? Oh, and coming up with what my paper's actually goint to be about would be nice too.
Progress: 6 articles read, decided 2 of them really don't apply to my "topic." 1 page written, though it's very likely that I'll have to scrap what I have entirely to start again from scratch :P

Not bad, at least I did something. Off to bed...!

Lest anyone who reads my article notes wonders (though who really does, anyway?), I'm not a women's studies major. They're all for my Mideast Methods class :P

FEMINIST LONGINGS AND POSTCOLONIAL CONDITIONS

Lila Abu-Lughod, Remaking Women: Feminism And Modernity In The Middle East, Lila Abu-Lughod, ed., 1998.

Purpose of Book: 1) to address that "in the postcolonial world women have become potent symbols of identity and visions of society and the nation."
2) to address how "women themselves actively participate in these debates and social struggles."
3) to analyze "the complex ways that the West and things associated with the West, embraced, repudiated, and translated, are implicated in contemporary gender politics." (p. 3)

What: "the discourse we analyze are related in complex ways to local and global economic and political forces, and their impact has been uneven across the social spectrum." (p. 4)

How: "we can theorize only through carefully researched analyses of historically and regionally specific situations, something we have done in this book..." (p. 4)

Article Notes... )

"...feminism always occurs in particular contexts, historical and social." (p. 23)
