Lenten Special #4
Mar. 22nd, 2005 01:44 pmLess than a week before (the non-Eastern Orthodox) Easter, and Veni, Veni, Emmanuel takes on a deeper meaning. I'm pretty sure this is the: "O come, thou Dayspring from on high/and cheer us by thy drawing nigh/Disperse the gloomy clouds of night/and death's dark shadow put to flight" verse—words like "adveniens," "nebulas," and "dirasque mortis" clued me in :)
Very appropriate for the upcoming Good Friday: lots of death and gloom in this verse. Speaking of death, [Bad username or site: lynkemma / @ livejournal.com] concluded her postings on the first section of the Hàvamàl with a similar theme here.
I gotta say, Jesus is one unique guy, what with so many people still observing his death after almost two thousand years.
Veni, veni O Oriens
Solare nos adveniens
Noctis depelle nebulas
Dirasque mortis tenebras
Gaude, gaude! Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel
