Catching Up on the Past Few Days
Jul. 18th, 2005 09:51 pmI spent the whole weekend and then some time reading nothing but Harry Potter and HP-related essays/speculations/analyses. I'm taking a breather to recount the other things that have happened in the past few days.
Movie:
Saw Howl's Moving Castle with
tanechigai and a friend of hers tonight. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, creator of famous animations such as Castle in the Sky, Totoro, and most recently, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle is a film about an 18-year-old girl (Sophie) who got trapped in an old woman's body. She ended up in a heartless wizard's house, Howl's Moving Castle. Howl himself, as well as his heart, are under a spell. The movie is about how both characters learn to love each other with the help of a motley cast of supporting characters.
Very good film, excellent animation (of course, I've always loved Hayao Miyazaki's stuff), and utterly magical. It brings me back to my childhood, when I saw Castle in the Sky at a move theater in Hong Kong ^_^

tanechigai's thoughts on the movie here.]
Book:
Yes, I've been reading something other than Harry Potter. A few days ago, I read Lois Lowry's The Messenger, her third book in the Giver trilogy. While I still think The Giver is the best book of them all, I really like this third book. It brings all three books' main characters together and show how they save their worlds through using their respective gifts.
I highly recommend all three books, especially if you like AU/Fantasy novels. These books are aimed for a Young Adult audience, but Lowry writes with so many layers of depth that even adults are captivated by her worlds.
Animation:
I ran across this in
ee970's LJ the other day. It's sooo funny, especially if you've ever seen those ubiquitous Kikoman soy sauce plastic fish thingies before. I don't really know how to describe it except that it completely cracked me up. It's also kind of weird, so be warned ;) Link here. You need Flash to run this.
Harry Potter:
All right... *sneaks back into HP discussions* I wrote down my reaction to HBP in a f-locked post to those who I know have already finished the book. If you've already read the book or don't mind spoilers, let me know and I'll add you. I might un-f-lock the page later on, but for now I don't want to give accidental spoilers to those of you who're still reading.
( And now a couple of memes I ganked from methegirl3... )
