Congratulations to Liz Wei and Vince Lam on their special day!
June 11, 2005

Today must be a good day for marriage. I know two other couples getting married today. So congratulations also to my former co-worker Lisa and her now-husband Danny, and also to my J-school friend Jenn and her now-husband Chuck :)

For the wedding, I borrowed roommate #1's dress and roommate #2's shoes (both roommates like to dress people up, I'm sure [Bad username or site: tanechigai / @ livejournal.com] can attest to that). Grrr... I hate dresses, and I only really wear two pairs of shoes ever since I got to NYC—my sneakers and a non-sneaker pair of walking shoes.

Implications of gender stereotype and gender role perception aside, I dislike dresses because they restrict movement. I can't stand, walk, sit, or make other movements without needing to give consideration to how not to make the dress static-y or ride too high up my legs. So much for the gracefulness of dress-wearing ladies. I'm a complete klutz when not in pants.

As for dress shoes, who ever invented heels anyway? My main issue with dress shoes is, again, movement restriction. I can hardly walk in them, and I'm one of those people who feels psychologically held back if I don't walk at a speed of something like 3-4 m.p.h. (while the rest of the pedestrians seem to crawl at the snail speed of < 1 m.p.h.). So my forced decrease in walking speed today—not to mention drastic decrease in comfort—was frustrating to say the least.

I did think ahead enough to bring a change of clothing for after the wedding and reception—including a change of shoes. Best decision I made the entire day.

I'm with you on the high-heeled-shoes-hate. I have one pair and never wear it unless I *know* that I'll be sitting down all evening. It's unhealthy and painful.

(And shoes with high heels were invented as riding shoes initially, around 1600, to prevent shoes from slipping through stirrup. They were first worn by men, and then adopted by women as a kind of wow-aren't-I-liberated sort of thing. Times change, huh?)

Ah, if only high heels remain an equestrian footwear...

At least the original intent of the design was functional. I'm all for practicality, just not for making things less convenient.

Cranium's fun but only if your team is uh.. decent. Kinda sucks when they aren't. LALA :)
